nurturingtalk@primary (formerly known as Nurturing Talk) was developed and written by Clare Reed in conjunction with Helen Stollery and Claire Eccleshall from The Nurture Group Network. It is a targeted and flexible intervention programme to develop children’s language and thought processes, helping them to talk effectively with other children and adults. It is designed to be used with children with social, emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties, initially on a one-to-one basis but moving on to partner work and then being able to operate successfully in small groups. Each child will have a different time scale working with the programme depending on their personal needs and developmental stage.
nurturingtalk@primary is based on the talkingpartners@primary programme and is linked closely to the SEAL materials in both models of practice and resources available.
The one day training is an interactive, hands on course focusing on the recent Ofsted Framework regarding the personal development, behaviour and welfare of children. Participants will experience a range of activities from the materials and receive a copy of nurturingtalk@primary plus a set of Talk Frameworks with Widgit symbols plus a Talkit Resource Pack (worth £70 – only available through attendance of the nurturing talk training). This course and accompanying resources can support how children communicate, enabling them to become more confident and independent speakers, listeners and learners. However, the skills and strategies that are taught to these target children can also be used at whole class level to develop SLC skills for all children.
